Brief biography

Nikolay V. Litviakov graduated from the master's program of the Biology and Soil Faculty of Tomsk State University in 1998. Since 1996, he has been working at Tomsk Cancer Research Institute: first as a research laboratory assistant, later (2015) as a Head of Laboratory of Viral Oncology. In 2003, he defended his Ph.D. thesis titled «Mechanisms of the immunotropic and antiblastoma action of interferon administered orally via a bacterial vector» in the specialties of physiology and pathological physiology физиология. In 2014, he defended his D.Sc. thesis titled: «Regulation of multidrug resistance gene expression in breast tumors during neoadjuvant chemotherapy » in the specialty of oncology.

Research interests

N.V. Litviakov is a specialist in the field of molecular oncology and cancer genetics. Under his leadership, technologies for personalized neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer and adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer have been developed and successfully clinically validated. These technologies made it possible to increase the effectiveness of preoperative chemotherapy from 54 to 88% in patients with breast cancer, as well as to increase the relapse-free survival rate by 25% in patients with lung cancer.

N.V. Litvyakov is engaged in the study of the natural and chemotherapy-induced clonal evolution of the tumor. Under his supervision, it has been established that clonal evolution during the development of a cervical tumor has an individual scenario, not only in terms of the set of driver mutations, but also in terms of the type of clonal relationships. New markers of metastatic clones of breast tumors have been developed and clinical trials of preoperative chemotherapy aimed at eliminating metastatic clones have begun. The team led by Prof. Litvyakov actively cooperates with the clinical departments of the institute and performs molecular genetic analysis for patients.

Under his supervision, 7 Ph.D. dissertations and 2 D.Sc. theses were defended.

N.V. Litviakov is an author of more than 350 publications, of which 169 were published in peer-reviewed journals, and 62 in foreign journals; 4 monographs, 16 patents, and 28 registration certificates for databases. Since 1998, he has been a Lecturer at the Department of Human and Animal Physiology of Tomsk State University.

Achievements, awards and grants

N.V. Litviakov is a member of the Academic Council of the Tomsk National Research Medical Center, member of the Academic Council of the Cancer Research Institute, member of the Coordinating and Scientific-Expert Commissions of the Cancer Research Institute, member of the Dissertation Council in the specialties of oncology, radiation therapy and genetics, member of the editorial board of the Siberian Journal of Oncology, included in the Scopus database. He is an expert of the Russian Science Foundation, member of the Expert Council of the Russian Science Foundation, member of the Joint Scientific Council of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Medical Sciences (2022).

The research of N.V. Litviakov and his colleagues was supported by grants from the Russian Science Foundation, scholarships from the President and the Government of the Russian Federation, the International Science and Technology Center, the Federal Target Program "Personnel" and the Federal Target Program "Research and Development", RFBR, the European grant "ERA.Net Rus Plus" , grants from other Russian foundations.

Nikolay V. Litviakov has been a Principal Investigator for the projects titled:

"Metastatic breast tumor clones" supported by RFBR grant No. 17-15-01203

"Suppression of the ability of tumor cells to stem plasticity to prevent the development of metastatic diseases" supported by the RFBR grant №21-15-00243.

Nikolay V. Litviakov has been Co-Principal Investigator of the project titled:

"Genetic and epigenetic editing of tumor cells and microenvironment in order to block metastasis" Agreement 075-15-2021-1073.

Litvyakov N.V. was awarded honorary titles and prizes: In 2004-2005, he was a grant recipient of the Foundation for the Promotion of Domestic Medicine and the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2008-2010, 2015, 2017 for success in his professional activities and active public position, he was awarded with certificates of honor and gratitude from the regional administration of the Tomsk region, the Duma of the city of Tomsk, the administration of Tomsk. In 2013 he was awarded the All-Russian Prize in the field of oncology "In Vita Veritas" in the nomination "For achievements in the field of experimental oncology". He is a Laureate of the Tomsk Region Prize in the field of education, science, healthcare and culture (2019). He was awarded the honorary title "Honorary Worker of Science and High Technologies of the Russian Federation" (2020), Honorary Diploma of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation (2020), Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2022)
