e-mail: aksana.kucher@medgenetics.ruBrief Biography
Aksana Kucher graduated from Belarusian State University (Minsk, Republic of Belarus) in 1987 with a degree in genetics; from 1983 to 1987 she studied at the full-time post-graduate school of the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics (Moscow), in 1987 she defended her thesis on the specialty “Genetics”. After graduated from the graduate school in April 1987, she was hired at the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Genetics, Tomsk Scientific Center, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, first as a junior researcher. In 1988 she was transferred to the position of senior researcher, and in 1990 she was certified as a leading researcher of the population genetics laboratory. From 2000 to 2001 Aksana Kucher studied in doctoral at Tomsk State University. In September 2001 she defended her doctoral thesis on the topic “Dynamics of the genetic-demographic structure and genetic diversity of indigenous and alien populations of the Siberian region” in the specialty “Genetics”. Later she worked at the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Genetics as a head of the research and information organization group, head of the laboratory of molecular genetics, and from 2010 to the present, Aksana Kucher is a leading researcher at the laboratory of population genetics. In 2010 she was awarded the academic title of professor in the specialty "Genetics".
From 2003 to 2018 she combined her scientific work with teaching at Tomsk universities: until 2009 she was an assistant at the Department of Medical Genetics at Siberian State Medical University, from 2003 to 2018 she was a Professor at the Department of Cytology and Genetics at the Biological Institute of the National Research Tomsk State University. Aksana Kucher is a member of the Russian Society of Medical Geneticists and the Vavilov Society of Genetics and Breeders.
Research Interests
The main scientific works in the field of human genetics are devoted to the problems of population genetics, genetics and epigenetics of common diseases. Research is performed in the following areas: the study of the importance of factors of population dynamics in the formation of genetic diversity in various regions of Siberia, other regions of Russia and adjacent territories; characteristics of the structure and dynamics of the gene pools of Siberian populations (including polymorphic gene variants of susceptibility to common diseases); search for genetic and epigenetic markers associated with common diseases and their endophenotypes.
Achievements, awards, and grants
Based on the analysis of genetic and demographic processes occurring in the Siberian populations have been established the leading factors of population dynamics that determine the formation of the structure of the gene pool. The structure of gene pools of a number of ethno-territorial groups is characterized by a complex of classical and molecular markers of genes of various functional classes (including genes for susceptibility to common diseases and mutations leading to single gene diseases). It was shown that the Siberian ethno-territorial groups (urban population of the Tomsk region, Yakuts, Tuvans, Buryats) have a specific genetic structure for polymorphic variants in genes of the cardiovascular diseases susceptibility and in genes of immune response regulation. It is established that the “sphere of competence” of genes of susceptibility to common diseases is broader than genes the immune response regulation, but both groups of genes are involved in the formation of susceptibility to diseases of the cardiovascular system, infectious and other pathological conditions and their clinical features. It was revealed that the structure of associations of genetic markers with diseases can be modified by the presence of a comorbid pathology.
Under the guidance of Professor A.N. Kucher have been performed studies of the molecular features of some single gene diseases (phenylketonuria, spinocerebellar ataxia type 1) and their results allowed to characterize not only the spectrum of mutations underlying these pathologies, but also to identify processes that are potentially important for the prevalence of these pathologies.
The theoretical studies of Aksana Kucher are devoted to: analyzing the importance of microRNA in the development of diseases of a multifactorial nature (first of all, diseases of the cardiovascular system and atherosclerosis, in particular); identifying common and specific genetic markers for various common diseases (including comorbid ones); establishing the role of environmental factors (in particular, nutrients) in the formation of the risk of common diseases development taking into account the individual genetic characteristics (modification of the effects of genetic factors by nutrients; genetically determined differences in the needs in different nutrients); some methodological problems of identifying the genetic component of common diseases.
Aksana Kucher is a co-author of about 300 publications, including monographs, articles in the genetic journals - Russian Journal of Genetics, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Biology, Ecological Genetics, Biochemistry, etc.; co-author of a software and database. Under the supervision of Professor A.N. Kucher was defended 7 theses for the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences in the specialty "Genetics". A.N. Kucher is an active participant in a number of scientific studies supported by the State Scientific-Technical Program “Health of the Population of Russia”; federal special-purpose research and development programme "Research and development in priority areas for the development of civil science," "Priority areas of genetics"; federal special-purpose research and development programme "Research and development in priority areas of science and technology"; grants of the President "Leading Scientific Schools"; RFH, RFBR, RSF grants.
For her achievements, Professor A.N. Kucher was awarded the Honorary Diplomas of the Tomsk Region Administration, the Mayor of Tomsk, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the National Research Tomsk State University; Gratitude from the Council of Rectors of Tomsk Region and Gratitude from Tomsk State University; awarded the Jubilee Medal "400th Anniversary of the City of Tomsk", in 2017 she awarded the title "Honored Veteran of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences". She is the Winner of the Tomsk region competition in education, science, health and culture (as a member of the population genetics laboratory team), the Winner of the competition for the appointment of professors of the Governor of the Tomsk region for scholarships, encouraged by the Regional Public Foundation for Assistance to Medicine. For the series of studies on the population-genetic structure of the population of the Republic of Tuva, she was awarded the Diploma of the Legislative Chamber of the Great Khural of the Republic of Tuva and the State Prize of the Republic of Tuva.
