Brief Biography

Alexander Mikhailovich graduated from the Medical Faculty of Tomsk Medical Institute in 1975. After graduation, he studied in postgraduate school at the Department of Pathological Physiology of Tomsk Medical Institute, which he graduated in 1978, in the same year he successfully defended candidate dissertation. After graduation during the year he worked as a junior researcher at the Hematology Department of the Central Research Laboratory of Tomsk Medical Institute (1978-1979) and then as an assistant (1979-1983) and senior lecturer (1983-1984) at the Department of Pathophysiology. In May 1984 he was transferred to the Siberian branch of the Institute of Pharmacology of the USSR as a scientific secretary. In 1985 he was elected as the Head of the Laboratory of Pathophysiology and Experimental Therapy. In the same year he successfully defended his doctoral thesis "The Role of lymphoid tissue in the regulation of myelopoiesis under extreme impacts". In 1987 Alexander Mikhailovich was approved as the Deputy Director of Research Institute of Pharmacology of SB RAMS on scientific work, and in 2008 he was approved as its Director. Since March 24, 2016 he is Research supervisor of Goldberg Research Institute of Pharmacology and Regenerative Medicine.

February 19, 1994 A. M. Dygai was elected as a corresponding member, and in February 20, 2004 he was elected as a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2013 after the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences became incorporated into the RAS, he became an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Department of Medical Sciences (Section of Biomedical Sciences).

In September 29, 2017 A. M. Dygai was elected as a Deputy Academician-Secretary of Department of Medical Sciences of RAS - Head of Section of Biomedical Sciences.

Research Interests

Scientific activity is devoted to the questions of pathophysiology, pharmacology and cell technologies. A. M. Dygai studied local and distant mechanisms of regulation of progenitor elements of different classes, including stem cells in norm and at pathology. On the model of the blood system the role of the individual components of tissue microenvironment and their interrelationships in the regulation of processes of tissue adaptogenesis in norm and under the action of pathogenic factors, the mechanisms of direct and mediated influence of the neuroendocrine system on the process of cellular self-renewal were investigated. For the first time in the world under his leadership created "Theory of regulation of hematopoiesis", "Concept of insufficiency and failure of deep reserve regeneration mechanisms", "Pharmacological strategy of regenerative medicine based on stimulation of endogenous stem cells by imitation of natural regulatory systems." A number of original methods of tissue culture, pathogenetically substantiated methods of correction of pathological conditions and new effective drugs of natural and synthetic origin, including those created using nanotechnology based on recombinant forms of cytokines and other biotechnological analogues of function regulators were developed.

Achievements, awards, and grants

A.M. Dygai is the author of 777 published scientific papers, including 37 monographs and 174 inventor's certificate and patents. Under his leadership 21 doctoral and 44 candidate dissertations were prepared. He was awarded the prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Science named after A. A. Bogomolets (1993), prize of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences for the best work in the field of fundamental medical research (1999), Russian Federation Government prize in the field of science and technology (2005), prize of Governor of Tomsk Region in education, science, health and culture (2010), international award Elsevier "SciVal / Scopus Аward Russia 2012" (2012) (for new, highly promising research area "Pharmacological Strategy for Regenerative Medicine"), the State prize of Novosibirsk Region for achievements in science and technology (2013) etc. In 2001, A. M. Dygai was awarded the honorary title of Honored worker of science of the Russian Federation, in 2013 he was awarded the medal of Honor.

The scale and quality of the scientific and practical significance of the works of A.M. Dygay and his students are confirmed by the grant of President of the Russian Federation received in 2008 to support the leading scientific schools of Russia, the competition of Russian Foundation for Basic Research won in 2008, as well as grants received under various Federal target programs. Thus, in the framework of the Federal target program "scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel of innovative Russia" for 2009-2013 A. M. Dygai was the head of the State contract on the theme "Fundamental research in the field of genomic, post-genomic and cell technologies and the development of a new class of drugs based on regulators of the functions of progenitor cells for regenerative medicine" (2010-2012), in the framework of the Federal target program "Development of pharmaceutical and medical industry of the Russian Federation for the period until 2020 and further perspective" under his leadership State contract on the theme: "Preclinical studies of hepatoprotective based on immobilized hyaluronate-endo-β-N-acetylglucosaminidase"(2011 – 2013) was conducted, etc.

Alexander Mikhailovich Dygay is Deputy Academician-Secretary of Department of Medical Sciences of RAS -  Head of Section of Biomedical Sciences, a member of Joint Scientific Council of SB RAS on medical sciences, Presidium of the Russian society of pharmacologists, Co-Chairman of National society for regenerative medicine, Vice-President of the Russian society of pathophysiologists, member of International society of pathophysiologists, member of the editorial boards of the journals "Bulletin of experimental biology and medicine", "Cell technologies in biology and medicine", "Experimental and clinical pharmacology", "Pathological physiology and experimental therapy", etc.
