Brief Biography

A. T. Tepljakov graduated from the department of general medicine of the Altai State Medical University. From August 1966 to September 1986 he worked as a therapy teacher in the medical training school of Kamen-na-Obi.

From 1968 to 1971 he attended full-time postgraduate study at the Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases Department of the Tomsk State Medical Institute. From 1971 to 1981 he worked as the assistant at the same department.

In 1972 he was awarded academic title Candidate of Medical Sciences (“Functional-morphological state of the stomach in patients with a diffuse form of chronic pneumonia with predominance of obstructive pulmonary emphysema”). In 1987 he has defended doctoral thesis titled “Microcirculation and blood circulation in the small circle with rheumatic mitral stenosis and pulmonary heart disease” for academic degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences.

Since 1981, his medical, scientific and scientific-organizational activities have been connected with the Cardiology Research Institute. He worked as a Head Of Cardiac Failure Department until 2018.

Research Interests

A. T. Tepljakov is developing the new methods of treatment and prevention of ischemic heart disease in patients suffered from myocardial infarction with cardiac failure. He also studies fundamental aspects of pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology, angiology and cardiosurgery.

He supervised the big cycle of works connected with pathogenesis, early diagnosis, drug and non-pharmacological treatment of chronic heart failure.

A. T. Tepljakov developed new scientifically grounded approaches in the strategy of cardiac rehabilitation of patients with chronic cardiac insufficiency after coronary artery bypass graft and endovascular revascularization. He develops new original hypothesis of the cytokine model of cardiac insufficiency and the concept of diastolic heart failure. The results of multi-year research are principally new scientific facts showing that an increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines is detected in a special cohort of patients with coronary atherosclerosis (factor of high cardiovascular risk).  Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukine-1 and tumor necrosis factor are sensitive markers of coronary thrombosis, restenosis of stents after endovascular coronary revascularization, closure of coronary bypasses, progression of heart failure and high cardiovascular mortality.

A. T. Tepljakov and his research team are studying the role of neurohormonal, molecular-genetic and immunometabolic mechanisms of chronic cardiac insufficiency development in patients with postinfarction cardiac remodeling.   With the help of this knowledge, highly effective cardiac rehabilitation technologies were developed using controlled physical training, endovascular coronary revascularization with the implantation of drug-eluting stents, and others.

The department under Tepljakov supervision has made a number of tests of different drugs, important for the science and practice of healthcare: superelective β1-adrenergic blockers (concor, betalk-ZOK, nebivolol), angiotensine transforming enzyme inhibitors, AT1 receptor blockers AT II, β-oxidation blockers of free fatty acids, statins, immunomodulators of the new generation.

The results of A. T. Tepljakov works are 20 monographs (including chapters in collective monographs), learning guide, 4 guides for doctors, 600 research papers including 242 articles, 19 patents of inventions.

A.T. Tepljakov has prepared 16 doctors and 53 candidates of medical sciences.

Achievements, awards, and grants

In 1991 Tepljakov has been awarded with the title professor. Since 1999 he has been an active member of International Informatization Academy. Since 2001 he has been the Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.

In 2003 A. T. Tepljakov with colleagues from TUSUR University (Professor N.I. Pustynskij) developed and implemented the original television-calculative diagnostic system in the clinical practice. It was made with the help of fund “Fundamental research of the higher school in the field of natural and humanitarian sciences” grant support. The system has received positive reviews from experts.

In 2007 A. T. Tepljakov got a scholarship of the Tomsk region governor (as the winner of the contest).

He is the member of editorial board of two journals recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission: “Siberian Medical Journal” and “Complex Issues of Cardiovascular Diseases”. A. T. Tepljakov is the member of two dissertation committees D. 208.096.2 SSMU (14.01.04 – internal diseases) and D. 002.272.02 Tomsk NRMC (14.01.05 – cardiology.)

In 2008 A. T. Tepljakov was awarded the academic title "Honorary Cardiologist of Russia" for the merit in the development of cardiac science and the organization of cardiology services. In 2006 and 2011 A.T. Tepljakov was awarded the Certificate of Merit of Tomsk Scientific Center and Administration of Tomsk region for long-term fruitful work and a great contribution to the development of medical science and practical healthcare.
