Brief Biography

After graduating from the Faculty of General Medicine of Tomsk Medical Institute in 1972, Vladimir M. Shipulin worked as a surgeon in the City Hospital N 3. From 1975, he worked in a position of a Junior Research Scientist in Tomsk Medical Institute. He entered the post-graduate course in 1975 and became an Assistant Professor at the Department of General Surgery of Tomsk Medical Institute in 1978. In 1980, he defended doctoral thesis titled “Functional state of kidneys in direct mechanical cardiac massage” for an academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 1984, he became a Docent at the Department of General Surgery of Tomsk Medical Institute. Vladimir M. Shipulin became a Senior Research Scientist of the Department of Cardiac Rehabilitation in 1986 and the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the Cardiology Research Institute in 1987.

In 1991, he defended doctoral thesis titled “Integrated surgical treatment of patients with occluding atherosclerosis of brachiocephalic arteries” for an academic degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences. From the same year, he became a Leading Research Scientist of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the Cardiology Research Institute. Since 1994 till now, Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery Vladimir M. Shipulin is a Head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the Cardiology Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC. In 2003, Vladimir M. Shipulin was awarded a title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation. 

Research Interests

Primary research interest of Vladimir M. Shipulin is general cardiovascular surgery, in particular, surgical treatment of ischemic cardiomyopathy. He is an author of over 700 scientific works including 10 monographs, 60 patents of invention, and 6 authorship certificates. For the last five years, he published 120 works including 12 international publications abroad.

Achievements, awards, and grants 

Vladimir M. Shipulin is a cardiac surgeon and a scientist. He is a Physician of Superior Merit known in Russia and abroad. Vladimir M. Shipulin was elected as member of the International Association of Angiology in 1993 and the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons in 1998.

Professor Vladimir M. Shipulin established the scientific school of cardiac surgeons and cardiac anesthesiologists (Tomsk School of Cardiac Surgery) that received a grant of the President of the Russian Federation (2006) as a governmental support of leading scientific schools.

Under supervision of Vladimir M. Shipulin, 13 dissertations for a degree of Doctor of Sciences and 37 dissertations for a degree of Candidate of Sciences (equivalent of Ph.D.) have been defended. Four and five dissertations for the degrees of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences have been defended during the last five years. Currently, the work for six more dissertations is in the progress (four and two dissertations for the degrees of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences, respectively). Vladimir M. Shipulin is a Member of Academic Council of Cardiology Research Institute.

Due to proficiency in English, wide international connections, and recognition of Professor Shipulin, almost all specialists working in the department under his supervision have received trainings in the leading cardiac surgery hospitals in Europe and America and are the specialists of the highest class.

With active involvement of Vladimir M. Shipulin and under his supervision, the Cardiovascular Surgery Department provides a whole range of high-tech surgical interventions on the heart and blood vessels for both adults and children. These operations include coronary artery bypass grafting, surgical valve replacement, surgeries for the left ventricular aneurysms, surgical treatment of heart failure, surgeries on the aorta and its branches, wide specter of surgical interventions for congenital heart diseases including minimally invasive procedures. The use of state-of-the-art pre-, intra-, and post-operative procedures, implemented by Vladimir M. Shipulin, resulted in a decrease in mortality of cardiovascular patients comparably to the European standards and brought the department in line with the best specialized hospitals in Russia. Only for the last five years, he personally operated over 750 patients. Professor Shipulin is a participant of many national and international cardiac surgery forums. He is a member of the International Association of Angiology (since 1993) and the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (since 1998).

In 2005, Vladimir M. Shipulin initiated signing of trilateral agreement between Cardiology Research Institute, Tomsk Region Administration, and philanthropic alliance “From Heart to Heart” to establish international center for cardiological and cardiac surgery care for children with congenital heart diseases based on the Departments of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. Because of this initiative, thousands of children with congenital heart diseases from Tomsk and other regions of Russia received qualified help from Tomsk and American cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Tomsk is currently on of a few cardiac surgery centers in Russia where successful operations are performed in newborns with complex congenital heart diseases; surgical mortality if comparable with European standards.

Vladimir M. Shipulin actively represents Tomsk school of cardiac surgeons abroad by presenting scientific reports at international meetings, congresses, and symposia. In 2010, the Russian Academy of Natural History awarded him a title of Founder of Scientific School.

On numerous occasions, Vladimir M. Shipulin was awarded Certificates of Merit for his outstanding contribution to the development of cardiological care for people from the Governor of Tomsk Region and the Mayor of the city of Tomsk. In 2001, he received commemorative silver medal of the Republic of Sakha Yakutia for implementation of children’s cardiac surgery care in the Republic.

In 2003, he was awarded a title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.

In 2008, Vladimir M. Shipulin received the Award n.a. Bakulev for Outstanding Service in Cardiac Surgery.

In 2009, according to decree of the President, Vladimir M. Shipulin was awarded degree II Medal of the Order of Merit for the Motherland for his professional achievements, contribution to medical science, and long-standing productive work.

By decree of the Academic Council N 14 from June 8, 2011, Vladimir M. Shipulin received Silver Medal and Award n.a. Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Elena E. Litasova for outstanding contribution to the development of medical science.

In 2011, together with co-authors, he received the Certificate of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks in nomination of “Top 100 Inventions of Russia” for the development of the approach to matching the length of the right internal mammary artery as a conduit “in situ” for mammary coronary bypass of the right coronary artery in patients with ischemic heart disease (patent of the Russian Federation N 2396914).
