Brief biography
Zhanna A. Startseva graduated with honors from Siberian State Medical University in 1998. After graduating from the University, she entered the clinical residency at the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk Scientific Center, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2001, she was employed at the Radiology Department of Cancer Research Institute as a junior research fellow, and later, hold the position of senior researcher. In 2008, she defended her doctoral thesis for an academic degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences and became a Leading Researcher at Cancer Research Institute. Since 2010, Z.A. Startseva has been a Head of Radiation Department of Cancer Research Institute. Since 2015, she has been a Chief Radiation Therapist for the Siberian Federal District. In 2016, Z.A. Startseva was awarded the rank of Professor.
Research Interests
Zhanna A. Startseva is an author of more than 360 scientific publications, including the book titled «Modern methods of radiation therapy for breast cancer» (2003), the book titled «Neutron therapy in multimodal treatment for cancer» (2008), guide for physicians «Adjuvant radiation therapy in combined modality treatment for stage T1-2N0-1M0 breast cancer» (2002). She has 15 patents and 5 certificates of database registration. Under her supervision, 3 dissertations for PhD degree were defended.
The main research interests of Z.A. Startseva focus on the development of novel approaches to radiation therapy in multimodal treatment of cancer patients using high technologies, assessment of quality of life of patients as well as studying the role of clinical-morphological and molecular-genetic factors in tumor progression and disease prognosis. She developed and introduced into practice the original methods of planning and performing radiation therapy for patients with primary breast cancer and breast cancer local recurrence. She made a substantial contribution to the study of novel approaches to the planning of adjuvant gamma-and gamma-electron therapy in the complex treatment of patients with early breast cancer, taking into account unfavorable prognostic factors. The modern methods of neutron and neutron-photon therapy used for patients with primary breast cancer and breast cancer local recurrence have made it possible to increase the treatment efficacy without increasing the incidence of complications and worsening the quality of life of these patients. An original program of cancer treatment using local hyperthermia in combination with radiation therapy has been created.
Achievements, Awards and grants
Z.A. Startseva took an active part in the implementation of the Federal Target Programs: “A clinical trial of a small betatron with an energy of 10 MeV on the model of early breast cancer “ (1997-2001) and "Research and development in priority areas of the scientific and technological complex of Russia for 2007-2012" (No. 16.512.11.2063.
She was awarded with a badge of the non-commercial organization Association of Cancer Institutions of Siberia and the Far East (2016), Laureate of the Tomsk Oblast Prize in Education, Science, Health and Culture (2017).
She is a member of Russian Association of Radiation Oncologists, European Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, and European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology.
She is a member of Scientific Council of Cancer Research Institute and Dissertation Council of Tomsk NRMC.
