Sergey V. Miller

MD, DSc, Leading Researcher, Thoracic Cancer Department, Cancer Research Institute, Tomsk National Research Medical Center

After graduating from Siberian State Medical University in 1997, Dr. Miller completed residency and then full-time postgraduate training at the Research Institute of Oncology. Since 2002, he has been working at Thoracic and Abdominal Department of Cancer Research Institute as a Researcher. He held the position of Senior Researcher in 2005. Since 2010, Dr Miller has been a Leading Researcher of Thoracic and Abdominal Department.  In 2002, he successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Combined modality treatment including intraoperative radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy for lung cancer”. In 2009, he received DSc degree for his dissertation titled: «Current aspects of combined modality treatment for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer and correction of postoperative complications».

Research interests

His research interests focus on the improvement of combined modality treatment including chemo-and radiotherapy for patients with lung cancer. He took an active part in the development of novel methods for treatment of non-small cell lung cancer using preoperative chemotherapy in combination with single high-dose radiotherapy at the time of radical surgery. The feasibility of using chemotherapy and intraoperative radiotherapy for patients undergoing reconstructive and combined surgeries has been proved. For the prevention of postoperative complications, original methods of using titanium nickelide-based alloys have been proposed.

Dr. Miller is the author of more than 230 scientific papers on clinical oncology, co-authored three monographs entitled “Intraoperative electronic and remote gamma-therapy of malignant neoplasms”, “Combined treatment of locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer” and “Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for combined treatment of locally advanced non-small cell cancer”. He is the author of 23 patents of the Russian Federation for the invention and one copyright certificate of the Russian Federation.

Awards and Grants

Finalist in the nomination “Doctor of the Year” of the contest “Person of the Year”, organized by the Administration of the Tomsk Region (2003).

He was awarded the jubilee medal "400 years to the city of Tomsk" (2004), an honorary diploma of the governor of the Tomsk region (2010).
